Job Summary

We are presently recruiting for a Senior Application Engineer who will be part of the Distech Controls Enterprise Solutions team (DCES). You will be responsible for developing and delivering control system solutions for our strategic customers. As the senior member of the project team, you will be leading the design and software engineering activities to support the successful implementation of large and/or multi-site building automation projects.  

 

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Application Engineer will work with Project Managers and Application Engineers to deliver a high level of consistency in engineering and project delivery of our Strategic Account Customer projects.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Develop and manage control submittal packages that meet project specifications and scope
  • Create installation drawings outlining all required field wiring, part selection, controller IO assignment, panel layout, and sequence of operation required for project completion
  • Translate Building Automation and Control System requirements and specifications into solutions to successfully meet customer needs as well as create competitive advantage through innovative design and implementation
  • Identify potential areas for improvement within the existing engineering process and tool library
  • Coordinate with customers to ensure expectations and requirements are met with the engineered solution
  • Assist sales with developing realistic estimates for engineering effort required based on project scope, specifications, and drawings
  • Work closely with project managers, other application engineers, and Cx field engineers to align engineering activities with respect to project schedule and budget, customer as well as 3rd party vendors interfacing activities
  • Meet with other application engineers to ensure complete understanding of project design for programming, graphics, and commissioning efforts
  • Provide assistance in troubleshooting installation issues during the startup and commissioning of building controls and systems
  • Develop and refine engineering processes, standards, and associated documentation to increase efficiency and productivity at scale while maintaining or improving quality
  • Provide cross-functional support to other parts of the DCES business, such as Sales, Service, and other Project Teams
  • Engage with customers to enhance their experience with the Distech Controls Enterprise Solutions team

Skills and Minimum Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or more than 5 years of directly related experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the Building Automation System industry or related field with direct experience in drawing development
  • Expertise in the use of drafting software (Visio, AutoCAD) to develop a complete and comprehensive Building Management System drawing set
  • Comfort managing, maintaining, and developing multiple pieces of a final combined submittal package
  • Ability to work effectively from a home office/remotely
  • Self-motivated individual with innovative thinking, capable of prioritizing tasks and working efficiently without daily supervision
  • Ability to balance creativity, detail, and productivity when developing new drawing details and solutions
  • Current passport and ability to travel up to 40%
  • Extensive experience developing complete control submittal packages for new and retrofit BMS projects
  • Comfort selecting control component as appropriate for the application and managing project bill of materials
  • Familiarity with common energy savings control sequences including but not limited to ASHRAE Guideline 36
  • Familiarity with control panel design
  • Proven experience in integrating multiple software packages, including Excel, Word, and Visio, to enhance productivity
  • Applied understanding of computer networking
  • Extensive knowledge of common communication protocols used in the Building Management Industry, including but not limited to BACnet, Modbus, and LON
  • Expertise in reviewing project drawings, specifications, site audit reports, and existing control systems to develop a comprehensive understanding of a buildings mechanical systems and operations
  • Comfort auditing existing buildings and control systems for retrofit projects
  • Experience developing and managing project RFIs
  • The ability to configure and debug computer and software related problems
  • A thorough understanding of HVAC applications, building services operations, and general automated controls theory within and how they interact with overall building performance
  • A comfort reading, developing, and troubleshooting electrical and electronic wiring diagrams
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely
  • Ability to empathetically understand others' issues and perceptions, and creatively resolve them to achieve successful outcomes in both individual and team settings

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in Visio is required; experience with AutoCAD is preferred
  • Niagara AX and N4 Framework
  • Distech Controllers and related hardware devices

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 40% travel within the US with some international travel (valid passport required)

The range for this position is $80,400.00  to $144,700.00. Placement within this range may vary, depending on the applicant’s experience and geographic location.
