Job Summary

Product Compliance Specialist plays a central role in enabling compliant, safe, and timely delivery of hardware and connected products across Distech Controls, KE2Therm, and Atrius. This position ensures regulatory compliance throughout the product lifecycle, proactively monitors evolving global standards, and works closely with R&D, Quality, Product Management, Sourcing, and Legal.

 

This role will support strategic initiatives, connecting innovation with regulatory reality, ensuring that products are designed, evolved, and deployed with full regulatory foresight, proactively planning while minimizing late-stage disruption and enabling sustainable growth across product portfolios.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Main Responsibilities

 

Regulatory Interpretation & Certification Strategy

  • Track and interpret global regulatory requirements and how this translates to Building Management Systems (UL, IEC, FCC, RED, ETSI, ISO, CE, UKCA, etc.).
  • Monitoring emerging frameworks such as Digital Product Passport (DPP) and Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
  • Translate updates into actionable guidance and change impacts for design teams.
  • Influence product architecture early to meet or exceed current and emerging standards.

Product Certifications & Market Access

  • Prepare and manage technical files and declarations of conformity on a global scope.
  • Interface with test labs and certifying bodies (UL, CSA, FCC, BTL, OSHPD, etc.).
  • Lead compliance testing with internal and external partners, to support product development lifecycle planning.

Electronics & EMC/EMI Testing

  • Interpret regulatory standards at schematic/component level (EMC layout, filtering, shielding, wireless radio).
  • Partner with hardware engineering on board-level design for compliance.
  • Review BOM changes for compliance impacts and initiate mitigation strategies.

Cybersécurité & Conformité IoT

  • Contribuer aux initiatives alignées avec UL 2900, le Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) de l’UE et le cycle de développement sécurisé (SDL).
  • Travailler avec les équipes firmware et software pour intégrer les contrôles de sécurité et assurer la résilience cyber des produits.
  • Se tenir informé des meilleures pratiques selon les recommandations NIST IR 8259, le FCC Cyber Trust Mark, et autres cadres pertinents.

Documentation & Gestion des Modifications

  • Cartographier les processus et établir des procédures pour identifier les étapes critiques influant sur la conformité réglementaire des produits.
  • Examiner les demandes de changement dans les comités de revue de modifications, la gestion du cycle de vie produit, les achats durables, etc.

Collaboration Transverse

  • Collaborer avec les équipes cybersécurité, firmware et cloud pour soutenir des conceptions sécurisées dès la conception.
  • Fournir une expertise conformité pour les spécifications produits, les analyses de risque et les stratégies réglementaires.
  • Assurer le rôle de référent conformité auprès des équipes qualité, juridique, commerce international, achats, développement durable et cybersécurité.

Skills and Minimum Experience Required

  • B.S. in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or related field and/or related work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in product regulatory compliance or design engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of UL, FCC, CE, EMC/RF compliance and electronics fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with REACH, RoHS, SCIP, WEEE, TSCA, PFAS, sustainable sourcing, etc.
  • Experience working with NRTL labs and certification bodies.
  • Strong documentation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Bilingual French and English: To serve clients and external service providers across Canada and USA.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in building automation, connected controls, or HVAC industries with an understanding of communication protocols such as LonWorks and BACnet and their application in building control systems.
  • Understanding cybersecurity compliance (UL 2900, NIST, EU CRA, etc.).
  • Familiarity with DPP/ESPR, product sustainability requirements, or lifecycle transparency initiatives.
  • Exposure to international market access schemes (India BIS, China CCC).
  • Familiarity with PLM and compliance data tools.
