Senior Design Engineer (Semi-Remote)

Job Summary
Responsible for product development from concept through production, which includes new product, sustaining and resolution of field problems. Leads electro-mechanical product design and/or redesign, part assembly and detailed part drawings. Leads prototyping, testing, and assembly of samples. Leads various Product Design/development projects. Must be able to collaborate with all cross-functional members of the design team.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Works with Asian Finished Good Supplier to manage development of Next Generation Life Safety Equipment. In this role, manages the design development, creates critical documentation Import Specifications, DFMEA’s, PFMEAs, Instruction Sheets, design reviews, Product validation testing, etc. 30%
- Reviews Quality data and assists in finding solutions for Quality issues. 15%
- Leads various aspects of the design process including, but not limited to, the development of part geometry, assembly design and drawing generation. Design work varies from new product development to product enhancements and cost reduction activities. Develops and distributes engineering data in the form of Engineering Change Notices, bills of material and parts tracking. (Part of previous effort)
- Partners with the manufacturing facilities to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests and bill of material errors to keep the manufacturing lines running and ensure quality product is produced. Conducts pilot/pre-production runs. 10%
- Leads cross functional development team using the product delivery system (stage gate product development) for each major product. 10%
- Initiates and develops concepts for new products from Project Charters, and Specification Matrix provided by the Product Manager and other avenues such as reviewing competitor's samples and documentation, and free design techniques. Ensures concepts are agreeable with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate manufacturing facility. 5%
- Continuously looks to improve processes related to productivity, quality, purchasing and manufacturing; to include sourcing new or alternate processes, equipment, and/or training of manpower. Looks for advancements or changes in technology via tradeshows, vendors or other methods. 10%
- Support ABS/Lean Transformation by actively participating on Kaizen teams and completing of post Kaizen activity. May lead aspects of the Kaizen as necessary. 10%
- Submits test requests and actively engages with the testing group as necessary on any required follow-up. Submits prototype requests and works directly with the model shop for the production of prototypes and assembly of samples. Reviews functional specifications, project charters and competitors’ samples. 10%
Skills
- Proficient use of SolidWorks, Inventor is a plus, Windchill, cloud file sharing, Oracle or similar, MS Office, etc.
- Proficient in LEAN & Six Sigma methodology and practices such as standard work, time study, cause & effect, 5WHY analysis and other tools of DMAIC.
- The ability to communicate verbally, in written form and through sketches, and engineering drawings.
- Works well in cross-functional team environments.
- Possess understanding of manufacturing methods such as stamping, drawing, casting, metal and plastic extrusions.
- Leadership, to influence and enlist the cooperation of other team members to work towards the goal of completing and implementing new product development on time and budget.
- Knowledge of UL924 and UL testing processes very helpful.
- Understand and adhere to the appropriate established industry and safety standards.
- Experience with designing luminaires capable of withstanding harsh conditions such as IP66 and NEMA 4X.
- Experience designing assembly jigs/tools to assist in the engineering process.
- Experience in submitting for photometric testing and coordinating the resultant files into the application team to determine the lighting performance
Education (minimum education required)
- Bachelor of Engineering
Preferred Education (i.e., type of degree)
- Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline
Experience (minimum experience required)
- 3+ years of applicable experience required
Preferred Experience (i.e., industry experience)
- Commercial lighting experience preferred
- Life Safety experience a plus
