Job Summary
The Senior Software Engineer – New Ventures is the founding engineering hire for Acuity's 0→1 venture innovation team within the Atrius business unit, executing in alignment with AIS strategy and working directly with the Head of New Ventures – Technology & Execution on architecture, technology, and hands-on execution. The team is chartered as the leading edge ('tip of the spear') of AIS's building intelligence strategy, building and scaling the Atrius Software Apps portfolio (DataApps, AtriusOne) powered by the DataLab platform. This role owns the engineering build-out of the portfolio's live wedge application and the shared foundations of the app portfolio, carrying code from prototype through pilot deployment to eventually hand over for production-grade, field-reliable systems. Operating inside a lean founding team (~5 FTE), this engineer works full-stack across data pipelines, application logic, and user experience, and is accountable for building deployable, repeatable technical foundations that later scale into a dedicated delivery pod. As the team validates product-market fit and grows, this role is the technical anchor of the first pod, with a path to technical lead / engineering lead.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Hands-On Product Engineering & Feature Delivery
- Build and ship the live wedge application within the Atrius Software Apps portfolio (DataApps, AtriusOne) full-stack (data pipeline, application services, and user-facing experience) owning the engineering path from 'works in the lab' to 'works in the field'.
- Deliver production-grade features against clear, measurable milestones at venture speed, balancing iteration velocity with the quality needed for enterprise deployment.
- Serve as primary hands-on contributor: personally write, review, and maintain the founding codebase alongside the Head of Technology & Execution.
Architecture & Platform Foundations
- Partner with the Head of Technology & Execution to design system architecture, spatial data models (GeoJSON), and the shared foundations on Acuity's DataLab platform.
- Design for repeatability: every architecture decision supports not just the current wedge app but the broader Atrius Software Apps portfolio and the pod-scaling model that follows.
- Ensure new-venture architecture integrates with and complements Acuity's canonical data sources and existing platforms.
Data Integration & Pipeline Engineering
- Build and maintain integrations across the canonical data sources (ABL, Distech, Atrius, Q-SYS), handling ingestion, normalization, and reconciliation of heterogeneous building data.
- Engineer sensor / time-series data pipelines and anomaly-detection logic for facilities-management and operations use cases.
- Establish data standards and quality controls that make downstream application logic reliable and reusable across apps.
Deployment, Reliability & Security Readiness
- Own deployment infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, and performance benchmarks for pilot and production environments.
- Drive field reliability: instrument, monitor, and harden systems so pilots meet both technical and commercial success criteria.
- Establish security and compliance readiness appropriate to enterprise and regulated built-environment deployments.
Technical Discovery & Rapid Prototyping
- Translate validated product hypotheses into working prototypes quickly; spike, validate, and either harden or discard.
- Anticipate and balance the needs of product, customers, and operations to ensure prototypes generate clear technical and commercial signal.
- Support pilot instrumentation and feedback loops that validate product-market fit from the technical side.
Engineering Craft & Scaling Foundations
- Establish engineering standards, documentation, and code-quality practices that enable the team to scale from a founding engineer into a delivery pod.
- Improve upon entire processes and systems using significant conceptualizing and reasoning skills.
- Mentor future engineering hires and help set the technical culture of the venture.
Skills and Minimum Experience Required
Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field and 5+ Years of experience
Mastery of full-stack product engineering: production-grade delivery of data-intensive applications from prototype through deployment into enterprise or regulated environments, demonstrated as an early or founding engineer on a 0→1 product.
Deep expertise in cloud architecture, data-pipeline design, and API / integration engineering; comfortable owning the full stack — backend services, data modeling, and frontend — within a lean team.
Strong grounding in spatial / geospatial data (GeoJSON), time-series and sensor data processing, and anomaly detection relevant to building, IoT, or facilities-management domains.
Proven ability to operate under venture-stage ambiguity: builds fast, validates, and hardens; balances iteration speed with the architectural foresight required for repeatable, scalable foundations.
Deployment and reliability engineering: CI/CD, observability, performance optimization, and security / compliance readiness for pilot-to-production transitions in the field.
Collaborative cross-functional problem solving with product and commercial partners; translates customer and field problems into sound, deployable technical solutions.
Ability to establish engineering standards, documentation, and craft, and to mentor as the team scales from a founding engineer into a full delivery pod; clear technical communicator across the venture team.
Preferred Skills and Experience
BSc / MSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, with strong computer-science fundamentals (systems, data structures, distributed systems). Equivalent demonstrated engineering depth accepted in lieu of formal degree.
Founding or early engineer at a startup or 0→1 product team, with a track record of shipping data-intensive B2B SaaS from prototype to production. Full-stack proficiency across a modern cloud and data stack. Experience with geospatial / GeoJSON data, sensor / time-series pipelines, and anomaly detection strongly preferred. Domain experience in IoT, intelligent building systems, PropTech, or facilities management a strong plus. Comfortable being the first or one of the first engineers on a product, setting standards, owning deployment, and scaling foundations into a delivery pod.
